Road and bridge construction on the northern section
A new box culvert by Cat Lake improves fish habitat. Upgrading of the intersection at the Garabaldi Lake recreation area continues as area is hydro seeded. Hydroseeding is a planting process which utilizes a slurry of seed and mulch. The slurry is transported in a tank, either truck or trailer mounted and sprayed over prepared ground in a uniform layer. Hydroseeding is an alternative to the traditional process of broadcasting or sowing dry seed. It promotes quick germination and inhibits soil erosion.
Rock from ongoing blasting north of Cheakamus River Bridge is trucked to construction work by Powerline Hill where it is being used as fill.
Blasters preparing for smaller blasts that will be done inside a 30 minute traffic delay. You can see the charge with the detonation cord being inserted in a drill hole. Notice the person setting the charge has a safety harness to prevent an inadvertent fall. A push rod is used to ensure charge is all the way in to the drill hole. The explosive being used is quite effective at splitting rock but much less dangerous than TNT.
Work is underway on the Cheakamus River Bridge at Daisy Lake. This is the longest bridge on the improvement project. Footings are being built for this new bridge, which will twin the existing structure and provide two northbound lanes.
