West Vancouver Photo Gallery Archives – Spring 2006
Crews completed a lane shift at the end of July 2006 on Highway 1 near the Eagleridge interchange (east and west views shown). Lane shifting allows traffic to be moved up against the hillside, making room for reconstruction of the eastbound lanes. To avoid ongoing traffic pattern changes, the contractor all complete all work in this section with only three lane shifts. With this lane shift complete, construction work will proceed on building retaining walls. Crews must first expose the bedrock on which retaining wall foundations are built. The type of wall system being constructed here was proven in a ‘test section’ of the Sea-to-Sky Highway, a one-kilometre portion between Montizambert and Strip Creeks completed in 2004. Reinforced concrete footings are then built on the exposed bedrock, and pre-cast concrete wall panels erected on the foundations. The pre-cast panels are back-filled with engineered granular material and the roadbed and paving are laid on top.
