LIONS BAY

Lions Bay Overhead

Starting just south of Kelvin Grove Way, the 3.5 km Lions Bay section passes through the central village, continues past homes on Brunswick Rd and extends to M Creek at the northern boundary of the municipality. This section is 4-lanes with a median barrier.

WHAT WE’RE IMPROVING

From West Vancouver through Lions Bay, the highway consists of improved 4-lanes with continuous median barrier. Through the community of Lions Bay, context-sensitive design has been implemented to affect driver behaviour by providing visual clues that they are entering a community. In addition to gateway signage, plantings and lighting used in all communities, the four lanes through Lions Bay includes traffic-calming curves and raised medians as safety and speed control measures.

Other improvements include a two lane bridge over the highway and split grade design that uses the natural topography to reduce noise and building footprint at Kelvin Grove Way. At the north end of Lions Bay the highway passes over a mini-change that feeds traffic to and from the local Brunswick Road, and improves connectivity for pedestrians.

FEATURES

Kelvin Grove mini-change

Kelvin Grove mini-change

The Kelvin Grove mini-change is designed to reduce noise from pre-construction levels, provide a safer entrance and exit to the community as well as improve east/west connectivity in the community.

Noise mitigation

Noise mitigation

The split-grade configuration of the highway through Kelvin Grove reduces noise because the centreline and upslope walls deflect traffic noise away from homes in the area.

Brunswick mini-change

Brunswick mini-change

At the Brunswick mini-change, the four lanes of highway traffic pass over Brunswick Road. The design provides safer access and exit as well as improves connectivity for pedestrians and local traffic.

Lions Bay - Gravel

Through Lions Bay the remaining improvements are mainly roadworks and landscaping.  This photo shows crews laying bottom lift pavement. The photo also shows some of the gentle curves that have been created to calm traffic through Lions Bay.
